I was a little late in watching this but I’m really happy that I finally gave it a chance.
This may be a strange way to start this, but of all the Horror shows currently on TV this one has my favorite costuming. There’s something about the Victorian feel and setting that I’ve always been captivated by, it’s one of the reasons I love reading Steampunk novels so much. The sets, the dresses, the suits; all of it is perfect. This show already gets high marks from me on the costuming alone.
Now for the substance
I found the first episode to be a little disjointed. It felt as though they were trying to cram a lot of information in without actually cramming any relevant information in. That’s probably the worst sentence I’ve ever written structurally but it’s the only thing that made sense to me. The characters and what I could gather of the story were interesting enough to make me want to watch the next episode though, so they at least have that going for them.
Now for the not so witty ending…
Petty complaints about the disjointed narrative aside, this is a show that I will give two more episodes to. I enjoyed it more than I do The Walking Dead but most of you already know how I feel about that train wreck of a show. Penny Dreadful has some decent scares, a great atmosphere, the deepest cast outside of American Horror Story and a large amount of beautifully decorated sets. I didn’t love episode 1 but I will absolutely watch episode 2.
